pollution on our planet. Did you know that there is a huge pile of garbage 20 km wide floating in the sea off the Mesoamerican barrier reef? But what exactly is microplastic? And how can we fight microplastics in the sea? And what this has to do with friendships &#8211; you can find out here.<\/p>\n\n<h3>Microplastics &#8211; the real monster under your bed<\/h3>\n\n<p>What is microplastic? Microplastics consist of tiny plastic particles that accumulate in our rivers and oceans. There are several sources: Synthetic fibers, for example, contribute a lot. But the biggest is of course plastic waste.<\/p>\n\n<p>If plastic waste is simply left in the sea, it doesn&#8217;t disappear &#8211; it just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces, and these are known as microplastics.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>No, there&#8217;s no real monster under your bed, honest! Okay, maybe a dust bunny or two &#8230; A candy bar wrapper? That Halloween mask that was so much fun last October? Oh no! Gather a few friends, get some gloves and bin bags and go for a nice walk.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even better, organize a competition, whoever collects the most garbage wins! Based in the Philippines, Trees for the Seas plants beneficial mangrove trees that protect the coastline from storm damage and erosion (as well as providing a nursery for wonderful marine life).<\/p>\n\n<p>Not only that: for every mangrove tree, 1 kg of plastic is removed from the sea.
